Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz is eligible to return to competitive cricket after the International Cricket Council (ICC) lifted his provisional suspension following an anti-doping case. The 32-year-old had tested positive for Carboxy-THC, a cannabis-related metabolite classified by the ICC as a “Substance of Abuse” under its Anti-Doping Code. Nawaz accepted the sanction and cooperated fully with the investigation, allowing the disciplinary process to conclude.
According to the ICC, the positive test was taken after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against the Netherlands in Colombo. The governing body confirmed that Nawaz admitted the violation and demonstrated that the substance had been used outside of competition and was not intended to enhance sporting performance. This distinction played an important role in determining the final sanction.
The ICC imposed a three-month period of ineligibility, backdated to 1 May 2026, when Nawaz voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension. Under the ICC Anti-Doping Code, the sanction could be reduced if he completed a substance abuse treatment programme approved by the governing body. Nawaz agreed to the programme as part of the resolution of the case.
Because Nawaz had already served approximately two and a half months under the provisional suspension and accepted the required rehabilitation measures, the ICC confirmed that his provisional suspension had been lifted. Subject to successfully completing the treatment programme, he will not be required to serve any further period of ineligibility, making him available for selection once all conditions are met.
The ICC also announced that, in accordance with its anti-doping regulations, Nawaz’s individual match records from Pakistan’s T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands on 7 February 2026 and all subsequent matches until 1 May 2026 have been officially disqualified. Although Pakistan’s team results remain unchanged, Nawaz’s personal statistics from that period have been removed from the official record.
Mohammad Nawaz has been an important member of Pakistan’s white-ball squad for several years. The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder has represented Pakistan in Tests, One-Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals, contributing with both bat and ball.
