Australia recall Matt Renshaw as they look to strengthen their batting after Bangladesh’s historic first-Test victory.
Australia have dropped opening batter Jake Weatherald from their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh after his difficult performance in the opening match. Matt Renshaw has been recalled to the Test setup as Australia look to make changes following their surprising defeat in Darwin.
Weatherald struggled during the first Test, scoring 23 in Australia’s first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second. His poor returns added to concerns about his consistency at the top of Australia’s batting order.
Renshaw’s return provides Australia with another left-handed option at the top of the order. The Queensland batter last played Test cricket in 2023 and has earned his recall after producing strong performances in domestic cricket, including 499 Sheffield Shield runs at an average of 49.90 in the previous season.
The change comes after Bangladesh produced a historic nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test in Darwin. Australia will now need to win the second match in Mackay to level the two-Test series.
Renshaw could potentially open alongside Travis Head, giving Australia a different combination at the top of the batting order. His return also represents an important opportunity to re-establish himself in the Australian Test setup after more than three years away.
Australia will be hoping the change can provide greater stability and help their batting unit respond strongly in the second Test. With the series on the line, the pressure will be firmly on the hosts to produce a much-improved performance.
