Pakistan captain Babar Azam remains in contention for a return to the playing XI for the second Test against England at Lord’s. Babar missed the opening Test at Headingley after suffering a hand injury during Pakistan’s warm-up match in England.
The injury occurred when Babar was struck on his right hand by a rising delivery during the practice match against the Professional County Club Select XI. Following an assessment, Pakistan’s medical team advised him to rest from the remainder of the warm-up game.
Babar subsequently returned to practice and took part in batting sessions at Headingley. His recovery was closely monitored before the first Test, but Pakistan ultimately decided not to risk him, with Salman Ali Agha stepping in as captain.
Pakistan’s heavy defeat in the opening Test has increased the importance of Babar’s potential return. England won by an innings and 103 runs, while Pakistan struggled significantly with the bat in both innings.
Reports indicate that Pakistan are considering several changes to their XI for Lord’s, with Babar expected to be among the major selection discussions. Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has also backed Babar’s return, highlighting the importance of his experience to Pakistan’s batting lineup.
The second Test begins at Lord’s on August 27, giving Pakistan a few more days to assess Babar’s fitness. If cleared by the medical team, his return could provide a major boost to Pakistan as they attempt to fight back and level the three-match series.
