Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has defended the state of Pakistan cricket amid growing criticism following the national team’s difficult Test tour of England. Speaking in London, Naqvi argued that temporary defeats should not be interpreted as proof that cricket has ended in a country, using unexpected results involving South Africa and India as examples.
Naqvi pointed to South Africa’s defeat against Namibia and India’s loss to Ireland while responding to criticism of Pakistan’s recent performances. His argument was that even leading cricket nations can suffer unexpected setbacks and that one difficult period does not necessarily mean the sport itself is in decline.
The comments came after Pakistan suffered two heavy defeats against England. Pakistan lost the opening Test by an innings and 103 runs before England won the second match at Lord’s by 194 runs, securing a 2-0 series lead.
The results triggered a major response from the PCB. Seven players were sent home before the third Test, while Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also replaced. Mike Hesson was brought in as the new Test head coach as Pakistan attempted to change direction.
Naqvi acknowledged that Pakistan are going through a difficult phase but defended the board’s willingness to make changes when players or staff are not producing the required results. He indicated that the PCB would bring in people it believes are necessary to improve the national team.
