Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board over the major changes made to the national team midway through the Test series against England. Gillespie questioned both the timing of the overhaul and the manner in which several players and coaches were informed that they were no longer part of the touring setup.
Pakistan made sweeping changes after suffering heavy defeats in the opening two Tests. England won the first match by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley before claiming a 194-run victory at Lord’s to take an unassailable 2-0 series lead.
Following the Lord’s defeat, Pakistan sent seven players home and also removed Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. Seven replacements were brought into the squad ahead of the third and final Test at Edgbaston.
Gillespie, who coached Pakistan between April and December 2024, questioned the instability created by frequent changes. He argued that constantly changing personnel makes it difficult for a team to develop consistency and a clear identity.
One of his strongest criticisms concerned communication. Gillespie said some players learned about their removal through the media or other people rather than being informed directly by the relevant officials. He described that approach as unprofessional.
The former Australia fast bowler also rejected suggestions that he and former Pakistan white-ball coach Gary Kirsten were responsible for the national team’s recent problems. Gillespie argued that neither was involved in the latest decisions and therefore should not be blamed for the current situation.
His criticism comes at a particularly difficult time for Pakistan cricket. The national team has experienced significant coaching turnover in recent years, with Gillespie pointing to the instability surrounding the Test setup.
Despite his frustration, Gillespie maintained that Pakistan possess talented players capable of competing at the highest level. He suggested that the country’s cricket structure needs greater stability and stronger support rather than repeated changes whenever results turn negative.
Pakistan’s immediate challenge was to respond to the upheaval in the third Test at Edgbaston. The match represented an early opportunity for the revamped setup to demonstrate whether the changes could produce an improved performance.
