Interim Pakistan Test coach Mike Hesson has backed the radically reshaped squad as the team prepares for a difficult final Test against England.
Mike Hesson has explained his approach to Pakistan’s dramatically reshaped Test squad ahead of the third match against England at Edgbaston. Hesson took temporary charge of the Test side after Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed from the role, with Pakistan making seven player changes following consecutive defeats.
Pakistan entered the final Test under significant pressure after England secured a 2-0 series lead. The hosts won the first Test by an innings and 103 runs and followed that with a 194-run victory at Lord’s.
The Pakistan Cricket Board responded by sending seven players home and calling up seven replacements. The coaching structure was also changed, with Hesson taking charge of the Test team despite already serving as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach.
Hesson acknowledged that the rapid changes had created a difficult environment but suggested that Pakistan’s players were familiar with dealing with uncertainty. He said the squad had responded positively and focused on preparing for the match rather than becoming distracted by the changes.
The new coach also stressed the importance of restoring Pakistan’s identity. He indicated that the team needed a better balance and wanted the players to demonstrate the traditional strengths associated with Pakistan cricket.
The changes have brought several younger and less experienced players into the Test environment. For Hesson, this provides an opportunity to assess a wider group of cricketers while simultaneously trying to prevent England from completing a 3-0 series sweep.
The timing of the overhaul has generated significant debate. Former coach Jason Gillespie publicly criticized the manner in which the changes were made, particularly the communication with players. However, Hesson’s focus has remained on getting the new group ready for the final Test.
Pakistan therefore entered the Edgbaston Test with a dramatically different setup from the one that began the series. Hesson’s ability to quickly establish a clear plan and get the reshaped squad performing will be one of the major storylines surrounding the match.
