England fast bowler Mark Wood has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a career that included 146 appearances across the three formats. Wood made his England debut in 2015 and went on to become one of the country’s fastest and most recognisable pace bowlers.
Wood’s international career included 38 Tests, 70 ODIs and 38 T20Is. He finished with 119 Test wickets, 80 ODI wickets and 54 T20I wickets. His career was also affected by recurring injuries, which frequently interrupted his availability and required periods of rehabilitation.
The Durham fast bowler’s last international appearance came in November 2025, when he played in the Ashes Test in Perth. Injuries subsequently prevented him from returning to the England side, and he has now decided to bring his international career to an end.
Wood’s pace was one of his defining characteristics. During England’s successful 2019 ODI World Cup campaign, he regularly bowled above 150 kilometres per hour and finished the tournament with 18 wickets at an average of 25.72. His speed provided England with a different dimension in their bowling attack.
He was also part of England’s victorious 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign. Wood took nine wickets in four matches during that tournament before injury ruled him out of the semi-final and final stages. He therefore became part of two England World Cup-winning campaigns, having also contributed to the 2019 ODI World Cup triumph.
Across his Test career, Wood claimed 119 wickets in 38 matches. His ability to generate high pace made him particularly valuable in conditions where England wanted an attacking fast bowler capable of creating opportunities through speed and short-pitched bowling.
Wood’s retirement closes an important chapter in England’s modern fast-bowling history. From his debut in 2015 to his final appearance in 2025, he represented England across multiple formats and was part of two World Cup-winning teams. His international career now comes to an end after more than a decade at the highest level.
