Former Ireland Batting Stalwart Ed Joyce Takes Over as Men’s Batting Coach

Former Ireland International Returns to National Setup in High-Performance Role

Former Ireland international Ed Joyce has been appointed Cricket Ireland’s new High Performance Batting Coach, taking responsibility for the Ireland men’s senior squad and the male talent pathway. Joyce begins the role immediately and returns to the national setup after previously serving as head coach of the Ireland women’s team.

Joyce enjoyed a lengthy international career with Ireland, representing the country 151 times and scoring 5,552 runs at an average of 40.82. His international record includes 10 centuries and 29 half-centuries. He also represented England on 19 occasions during his playing career.

After retiring from playing, Joyce moved into coaching and was appointed head coach of Ireland Women in 2019. During his time with the women’s programme, he worked on player development and performance before stepping away from the head coach position in February 2025.

His return now focuses on the men’s programme. Cricket Ireland said his responsibilities will cover the senior men’s squad as well as the male talent pathway, giving him a role that connects international performance with the development of future players.

The appointment comes as Ireland continue to build their men’s programme and prepare for important international assignments. Joyce’s own experience as an international batter gives him direct knowledge of the demands of high-level cricket and the technical requirements of batting across different formats.

Joyce’s international experience is particularly notable because he played for both Ireland and England. His 151 appearances for Ireland included a substantial contribution with the bat, while his England appearances also gave him experience of playing at the highest level of international cricket.

Cricket Ireland confirmed that Joyce will begin his new position immediately. His work with the senior men’s team and the male pathway will now form part of Ireland’s wider preparations as the country continues developing players for future international competitions.
