Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) captain Iftikhar Ahmed produced a composed unbeaten century as his side secured a draw against Kingsmen Academy in the fourth round of the President’s Trophy Grade-I 2026-27. The all-rounder’s 104 not out ensured KRL avoided defeat while chasing a daunting target on the final day in Islamabad.
Iftikhar Ahmed Anchors KRL’s Chase
KRL began their second innings with an imposing 467-run target after Kingsmen Academy declared their second innings at 167 for three. With limited time remaining, KRL opted for a patient approach rather than taking unnecessary risks in pursuit of an unlikely victory.
Iftikhar Ahmed led the resistance with a superb 104 not out from 109 deliveries. His innings contained 11 fours and five sixes, combining controlled strokeplay with enough aggression to keep the scoreboard moving. The century was the KRL captain’s 18th in first-class cricket, underlining his experience and consistency in the longer format.
Opener Shahzaib Khan provided valuable support at the other end, scoring 74 from 206 balls. His lengthy stay at the crease played an important role in ensuring KRL remained secure as the match moved towards a draw.
Kingsmen Academy Set a Huge Target
Kingsmen Academy had established a dominant position earlier in the match after posting 643 for eight declared in their first innings. Mohammad Suleman led the scoring with an impressive 182, while Salman Ali Agha contributed 145. Their substantial total placed KRL under significant pressure from the outset.
KRL responded with 344 in their first innings, with Mohammad Faiq scoring 159 and Iftikhar adding 63. Kingsmen then accelerated their second innings before declaring on 167 for three, leaving KRL with 467 to chase.
KRL Hold Firm to Secure the Draw
Despite the challenging target, KRL showed determination during their second innings. They reached 236 for four after 76 overs, with Iftikhar remaining unbeaten when the match ended without a result.
The draw was particularly important for KRL, who had yet to record a victory after four rounds of the competition. The result gave both teams a share of the points and kept KRL in contention as the tournament moves into its next phase.
Iftikhar’s century was the standout individual performance of the contest. His ability to bat through the remaining overs demonstrated the value of experience in first-class cricket, particularly when a team is attempting to protect itself from defeat.
President’s Trophy Points Table After Round Four
The fourth round also saw victories for Ghani and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). SBP moved to the top of the eight-team standings with 72 points, followed by Ghani on 66 and Kingsmen Academy on 56.
OGDCL occupied fourth place with 45 points, while KRL had 42. Pakistan Television were on 36, followed by SNGPL on 35 and MIT Solutions on 34.
The fifth round of the President’s Trophy Grade-I is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, with matches taking place in Abbottabad, Peshawar, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The remaining rounds will provide teams with further opportunities to climb the standings.
Iftikhar’s Knock a Positive for KRL
For KRL, the result may not have delivered a much-needed victory, but Iftikhar Ahmed’s unbeaten century offered a major positive. His 104 not out came under pressure and helped his team safely negotiate the final stages of the match.
As the President’s Trophy continues, KRL will look to build on this performance and convert strong individual contributions into match-winning results. For cricket followers, Howzzat will continue to bring the latest updates, performances and developments from Pakistan’s domestic cricket scene.
