Australia have dropped Marnus Labuschagne from their latest ODI squad as selectors prepare for upcoming series in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The decision comes after continued concerns surrounding his form in limited-overs cricket.
Labuschagne has been a regular part of Australia’s ODI setup for several years and was a member of the side that won the 2023 World Cup. However, his recent performances have not been enough to secure his place in the squad for the upcoming African tour.
Australia will play three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe and South Africa later in September. The tour will also be followed by a Test series against South Africa, making squad management particularly important for the reigning ODI world champions.
Several other players have also been omitted, while Australia have brought in emerging talents including Cooper Connolly, Oliver Peake and Joel Davies. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh return to the ODI setup after missing the previous series in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Labuschagne’s omission is notable because he has missed only five of Australia’s previous 56 ODIs. His exclusion highlights the competition for places within Australia’s batting group with the next World Cup approaching.
