Uncapped Sussex seamer Henry Crocombe earns his first senior white-ball call-up after taking consecutive County Championship hat-tricks.
England have rewarded Sussex fast bowler Henry Crocombe with his first senior white-ball call-up after a remarkable run of performances in county cricket. The uncapped seamer has been included in England’s 16-member ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
Crocombe’s selection comes after he achieved the rare feat of taking hat-tricks in consecutive County Championship matches. His performances during the domestic season caught the attention of England’s selectors and earned him an opportunity at international level.
The 24-year-old has been closely monitored by England for some time. He had previously been called into the Test squad in June as cover for Ollie Robinson but did not make his international debut.
His latest selection represents a major step forward in his career. Crocombe will now have the opportunity to work alongside some of England’s most experienced white-ball players, including Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jos Buttler, Joe Root and Adil Rashid.
Brydon Carse has not been included in either England’s ODI or T20I squads for the Sri Lanka series. His absence follows an incident outside a Derby nightclub that remains under investigation by the Cricket Regulator.
England have therefore used the upcoming series to introduce new talent while also managing several injury-related absences. Phil Salt is unavailable because of a quad injury, while Jacob Bethell is recovering after knee surgery. Jamie Overton has returned to both squads following his own injury absence.
The ODI series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin on September 22 at Chester-le-Street, followed by matches at Headingley on September 24 and The Oval on September 27. Crocombe could potentially make his international debut during the three-match series.
For Crocombe, the call-up represents the reward for a spectacular period of domestic cricket. Consecutive hat-tricks have put his name firmly on the international radar, and the Sri Lanka series could provide the next major opportunity in his developing career.
