Aneurin Donald made an aggressive start on his England debut, fulfilling Brendon McCullum’s expectations with an attacking approach against Sri Lanka.
England debutant Aneurin Donald made an immediate impression during the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Southampton. The Derbyshire batter was handed his international debut by England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, who had already highlighted Donald’s aggressive style and ability to attack from the first ball.
Donald opened the innings alongside Jos Buttler after being selected ahead of the series opener. McCullum had described him as a player who had been on England’s radar for some time and praised his raw power and ability to score quickly.
The 29-year-old responded with an explosive start. Donald scored 12 runs from his first five deliveries, including a six and a four, before he was dismissed. Although his stay at the crease was short, his strike rate of 240 showed the attacking intent that McCullum had identified before the match.
Donald’s selection followed an impressive period of domestic cricket. His performances for Derbyshire had helped him earn a place in England’s T20I squad, while he had also produced a rapid 31 from eight balls for the Lions against Sri Lanka shortly before the international series.
England’s decision to give Donald an opportunity came partly because several established players were unavailable. Phil Salt was injured, while other players were being managed after a demanding international schedule. McCullum therefore opted to introduce a player capable of maintaining England’s aggressive approach at the top of the order.
Although Donald did not remain at the crease for long, England’s overall batting performance was spectacular. Harry Brook smashed an unbeaten 114 from 49 balls and Jos Buttler scored 80 from 44 deliveries as England reached 254 for four.
The bowlers then completed the job, with Sonny Baker taking three wickets for 12 runs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 135. England won by 119 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
For Donald, the debut provides an important starting point rather than a final assessment. His aggressive opening approach was exactly what McCullum wanted to see, and further opportunities could allow the batter to establish himself in England’s white-ball setup.
