Newman Nyamhuri produced a historic five-wicket spell against Australia, becoming only the second Zimbabwean bowler to achieve the feat against the Aussies in ODI cricket.
Zimbabwe’s young fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri delivered a memorable performance against Australia in the opening ODI in Harare, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket. His figures of five for 62 were one of the major highlights of the match despite Australia eventually winning by 59 runs.
Nyamhuri’s spell came against a strong Australian batting lineup and included the important wicket of Matt Renshaw, who had just completed his maiden ODI century. The Zimbabwean bowler continued to attack throughout the innings and finished with five wickets as Australia posted 294 for eight.
The performance also created a piece of Zimbabwean cricket history. Nyamhuri became only the second Zimbabwean bowler to take five wickets in an ODI against Australia, joining an exclusive list of players who have achieved the feat against the former world champions.
Despite Nyamhuri’s efforts, Australia maintained control of the innings. Renshaw scored 109, while Cooper Connolly contributed 51 and Alex Carey played an important supporting role. Australia reached a competitive total of 294 for eight from their 50 overs.
Zimbabwe’s chase began with promise, particularly through experienced batters Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza. The pair put together a 98-run partnership and gave the hosts hope of mounting a serious challenge.
However, Australia’s bowling attack responded strongly. Nathan Ellis claimed five wickets for 31 runs, matching Nyamhuri’s five-wicket achievement and helping Australia dismiss Zimbabwe for 235 in 45.1 overs.
For Nyamhuri, the performance remains a major personal milestone. Taking five wickets against Australia is a significant achievement for a young bowler, particularly while facing an experienced batting lineup.
The series is not over, however. Zimbabwe still have two more ODIs against Australia, giving Nyamhuri and his teammates opportunities to build on the opening match. His five-wicket haul provides Zimbabwe with an encouraging individual performance to take forward as they continue their preparations for major international assignments.
