Ajit Agarkar is set to step down as chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee when his current term ends.
Ajit Agarkar has decided not to seek an extension as chairman of India’s senior men’s selection committee, bringing his tenure as chief selector toward its conclusion. Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in July 2023, and his current term is scheduled to end in October 2026.
The decision means the Board of Control for Cricket in India will now have to begin the process of identifying a new chairman for the senior men’s selection committee. Reports indicate that Agarkar has informed the BCCI that he does not intend to continue beyond his current term.
The BCCI has not yet announced a replacement. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has said that no official decision regarding a successor has been made, while the board’s office-bearers have been authorised to handle the decision concerning the future of the selection committee.
Agarkar’s tenure has covered several significant moments in Indian cricket. During his time as chairman, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, won the 2024 T20 World Cup and lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy. India also retained the T20 title earlier in 2026, making the period an eventful one for the national team.
The selection chairman plays a central role in India’s senior men’s team structure, working with other selectors and the team management on squad selection across formats. The next chairman will therefore inherit responsibility for important decisions as India continue their busy international schedule.
The BCCI’s search for a replacement comes at a time when India have several major assignments ahead. The selection committee will need to manage transitions across formats while continuing to develop the squad for future international tournaments.
For now, Agarkar remains in his position until the end of his current term. The BCCI is expected to discuss the selection committee’s future before formally appointing a new chairman.
