The inaugural European T20 Premier League entered its decisive knockout phase with four teams competing for a place in the final.
The inaugural European T20 Premier League entered its decisive stage in September, with the league table producing a closely contested race for the knockout places. Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Amsterdam Flames, Belfast Wolves and Rotterdam Dockers all finished the league phase on 13 points, making net run rate an important factor in determining the final positions.
The tournament featured six teams and was played across the Netherlands and Ireland. The league phase began in August before moving to Malahide for the final group matches and knockout games. The competition brought together a mixture of established international players and emerging European cricket talent.
Edinburgh Castle Rockers finished at the top of the league table with six wins, three defeats and one no-result, while Amsterdam Flames, Belfast Wolves and Rotterdam Dockers also collected 13 points. Edinburgh’s superior net run rate placed them at the top of the standings, while the other teams were separated by their respective net run rates.
Belfast Wolves secured their place in the qualifier after a dramatic final league-stage match against Edinburgh. The Wolves won a rain-affected contest by nine runs under the DLS method, with Glenn Maxwell producing an unbeaten 82 from 40 balls. The result helped Belfast move into the knockout positions.
The qualifier then brought Belfast Wolves against Amsterdam Flames at The Village in Malahide. Belfast chased down Amsterdam’s 133 with 136 for three in 18.3 overs to win by seven wickets and book their place in the final.
The championship match featured Belfast against Edinburgh Castle Rockers. Belfast posted 150 for five, with Tim Tector producing a superb 84 from 62 balls. Edinburgh responded strongly through Andries Gous, who remained unbeaten on 90 from 61 deliveries as the Castle Rockers reached 151 for three in 18.4 overs to win the inaugural title by seven wickets.
The final brought the inaugural ETPL season to a close, with Andries Gous named Player of the Match. Faf du Plessis was named Player of the Tournament after finishing as the competition’s leading run-scorer with 449 runs, while Michael Bracewell finished as the leading wicket-taker.
The first edition therefore concluded with a competitive league phase followed by a decisive knockout stage. With several internationally recognised players involved, the tournament provided another platform for European cricket and created a new franchise competition across Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
