England will begin a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka after completing a 3-0 T20I sweep over the visitors.
England are set to return to ODI cricket on September 22 when they face Sri Lanka in the opening match of their three-game series at Chester-le-Street. The series comes immediately after England completed a 3-0 T20I sweep against Sri Lanka, returning to the top of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings in the process.
England completed the T20I series with an eight-wicket victory at Old Trafford. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124 before England reached the target comfortably, with Jos Buttler finishing unbeaten on 62 from 32 deliveries. Harry Brook also contributed 33 and was named Player of the Series.
The T20I sweep extended England’s winning run against Sri Lanka in the format and moved them back to No.1 in the T20I rankings. The result also continued a strong period for England’s white-ball team under Brook’s captaincy, with the side having won 23 of its previous 26 T20 matches according to reports.
Attention now shifts to the 50-over format. England’s ODI squad includes Brook as captain alongside players such as Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Rehan Ahmed, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton and uncapped seamer Henry Crocombe.
The three ODIs are scheduled for September 22 at Chester-le-Street, September 24 at Headingley in Leeds and September 27 at The Oval in London. The matches provide England with an opportunity to assess their ODI combination ahead of the 2027 World Cup cycle.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to respond after a difficult T20I series. The visitors will have an opportunity to make changes in their approach as they move into the longer white-ball format. With England’s recent confidence and Sri Lanka looking for a response, the ODI series could provide a different contest from the T20I leg.
