Middlesex defeated Leicestershire by 31 runs at Trent Bridge to win the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and claim their first men’s white-ball trophy since 2008.
Middlesex ended a long wait for men’s white-ball silverware by defeating Leicestershire by 31 runs in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge. The victory secured Middlesex’s first men’s white-ball trophy since their 2008 T20 Blast success and ended a 36-year wait for a List A title.
Middlesex were in serious trouble after losing five wickets for 71 runs during their innings. Ryan Higgins then produced a crucial century, scoring 100 from 115 balls, while Harry Duke contributed 55. Their sixth-wicket partnership of 135 runs completely changed the direction of the innings and helped Middlesex reach 231 before being bowled out in 49.5 overs.
Leicestershire’s Ian Holland had earlier caused significant damage with the ball, taking five wickets for 36 runs. Despite his performance, Middlesex recovered through Higgins and Duke before setting Leicestershire a target of 232 for victory.
Leicestershire began their chase with hopes of completing a comeback of their own. New Zealand batter Nick Kelly kept the innings alive with a brilliant 103 from 107 balls. However, Leicestershire lost wickets around him and were eventually dismissed for 200 in 44.2 overs.
Middlesex’s bowlers then finished the job. Toby Roland-Jones took three wickets for 27 runs, while Tom Helm also claimed three wickets for 32. Young fast bowler Naavya Sharma took three wickets as well and finished the competition as its leading wicket-taker with 20 dismissals.
The victory represents an important moment in Middlesex’s limited-overs history. The club’s previous men’s white-ball trophy had come in the 2008 T20 Blast, while their most recent List A title before this final was in 1990. Ryan Higgins’ century and a disciplined bowling performance therefore combined to deliver a long-awaited trophy at Trent Bridge.
