Rain Abandons Quarter-Final as Pakistan Advance Without Bowling a Ball
Pakistan have reached the semi-finals of the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket competition after their quarter-final against Hong Kong, China was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of persistent rain in Nisshin, Japan. The match was scheduled for September 28 at Korogi Sports Park, but the weather prevented any play from taking place.
The washout meant that Pakistan progressed to the last four on the basis of their higher ICC ranking, in accordance with the tournament’s playing conditions. As no result could be produced on the field, the ranking-based qualification rule determined which team would advance. Pakistan therefore avoided a potentially difficult knockout contest against Hong Kong.
Sahibzada Farhan’s Pakistan side had entered the quarter-final stage after a strong group campaign. The team’s place among the higher-ranked sides meant that the players were able to benefit from the competition rules when rain completely disrupted the fixture. Hong Kong’s campaign, meanwhile, came to an end without the team getting an opportunity to challenge Pakistan with either bat or ball.
Pakistan’s progression gives the young squad another opportunity to compete for an Asian Games medal. Farhan has been leading a squad containing a mixture of established T20 players and younger cricketers, with the tournament providing valuable experience for players looking to strengthen their position in Pakistan’s international setup.
The semi-final is scheduled for October 1 at the same venue. Pakistan will face the winner of the quarter-final between Bangladesh and Malaysia, which is scheduled for September 29. This means Pakistan can now prepare for the next stage while keeping an eye on the outcome of the remaining quarter-final.
With the medal matches approaching, Pakistan remain in contention for the Asian Games cricket title. The team’s route to the semi-finals has been unusual, as it has advanced from the quarter-final without playing a single delivery, but the tournament regulations have officially confirmed its place in the final four.
