Virat Kohli Hits 55th ODI Century as India Beat West Indies by 8 Wickets

Kohli and Gill Centuries Power India to Dominant First ODI Victory

Virat Kohli produced another major milestone in his ODI career by scoring his 55th ODI century as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the first match of their three-match series. The match was played at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, where Kohli produced an unbeaten 139 to guide India to a convincing victory.

India’s chase was built around centuries from both Kohli and captain Shubman Gill. Gill scored 110, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 from 88 deliveries. Their performances allowed India to chase down the West Indies total comfortably and take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Kohli’s century came from 74 balls and included a series of boundaries as he accelerated during the latter stages of the innings. He eventually finished with 139 not out from 88 balls, adding another remarkable entry to his already extensive list of ODI records. His hundred also came with the additional milestone of reaching 15,000 ODI runs.

Gill was equally important in the chase. The Indian captain reached his 10th ODI century and provided a strong platform alongside Kohli. Their partnership removed much of the pressure from India’s pursuit and ensured that the hosts were able to finish the game with plenty of overs remaining.

India’s bowlers had earlier restricted the West Indies before the successful chase. Kuldeep Yadav was particularly effective, taking four wickets as the Indian attack kept the visitors from building a total capable of seriously challenging the hosts. The West Indies were therefore put under pressure from the beginning of the match.

The eight-wicket victory gives India an early advantage in the three-match ODI series. For Kohli, meanwhile, the innings added another significant landmark to his international career, with his 55th ODI hundred coming alongside the 15,000-run milestone. India will now look to carry the momentum into the second match of the series.
