India Beat Pakistan to Reach Asian Games Hockey Final

Late Goal Sends India Into Gold-Medal Match After Dramatic 4-3 Semifinal

Correction: Pakistan did not reach the Asian Games hockey final. India defeated Pakistan 4–3 in the men’s hockey semifinal on October 1 and advanced to the gold-medal match.

The semifinal produced a dramatic contest as India initially established a three-goal advantage before Pakistan mounted a remarkable comeback. India eventually secured the victory with a late goal from Abhishek, who scored with only 49.2 seconds remaining on the clock.

India started strongly and built a 3-0 lead during the match. Harmanpreet Singh scored twice, while Sukhjeet Singh added another goal as India appeared to be in firm control of the semifinal. Pakistan, however, responded strongly in the second half and transformed the match into a closely contested battle.

Pakistan’s comeback was led by goals from Abu Mahmood, Hannan Shahid and Waheed Ashraf Rana. The three goals brought Pakistan level at 3-3 and gave the Green Shirts renewed hope of reaching the Asian Games final.

With the match approaching its conclusion, both teams pushed forward looking for the decisive goal. India eventually found the breakthrough in the final minute when Abhishek’s attempt took a deflection off Pakistan defender Sufiyan Khan’s stick and found the net. The goal came with just 49.2 seconds remaining.

The result sends India into the October 3 gold-medal match, where they will face the winner of the other semifinal between Malaysia and South Korea. Pakistan, meanwhile, will compete for the bronze medal after narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The semifinal was another memorable chapter in the long-running sporting rivalry between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s comeback from three goals down made the match highly competitive, but India’s late winner ultimately decided the contest and kept their gold-medal defence alive.
