Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka continues her remarkable run at Flushing Meadows after extending her US Open winning streak.
Aryna Sabalenka continues to build one of the most impressive recent winning runs at the US Open. The world No. 1 began her title defence with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Camila Osorio, extending her winning streak at Flushing Meadows to 14 consecutive matches at the time of her opening-round victory.
Sabalenka arrived in New York with a major target on her back after winning the US Open in 2024 and 2025. She entered the 2026 tournament hoping to become the first player since Serena Williams to win three consecutive US Open singles titles.
Her victory over Osorio showed why she remains one of the tournament favourites. Sabalenka combined powerful groundstrokes with aggressive returning and controlled the important moments of the match. The Colombian fought hard, but the defending champion was able to maintain control and close out the contest in straight sets.
The Belarusian’s impressive record in New York continued into the second round, where she defeated Russian qualifier Polina Iatcenko 6-1, 6-1. That victory took Sabalenka’s US Open winning streak to 15 consecutive matches dating back to the 2024 tournament. She also produced 24 winners compared with only three from Iatcenko.
The streak highlights Sabalenka’s exceptional consistency at Flushing Meadows. She has developed a particularly strong record at the venue, where her combination of power and aggressive baseline play can be extremely difficult for opponents to handle.
Sabalenka is also looking to end a frustrating Grand Slam season. Despite reaching the Australian Open final, she was unable to win the title and later exited Roland Garros in the quarterfinals and Wimbledon in the fourth round. The US Open therefore represents her final opportunity of the year to add another major trophy.
With every victory, Sabalenka moves closer to an historic three-peat. Her early performances suggest she is comfortable on the New York hard courts, but the competition will become tougher as the tournament progresses.
