England captain Joe Root has praised his team’s new-look pace attack after England produced a commanding victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley. England won by an innings and 103 runs inside three days, giving Root an excellent start to his second spell as Test captain.
England’s fast bowlers were central to the victory, with Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue both finishing with eight wickets in the match. Jofra Archer also played an important role, particularly with early breakthroughs in Pakistan’s second innings.
Root was particularly impressed by the combination within England’s bowling attack. The captain highlighted the way the seamers complemented one another and suggested that the group may not yet fully appreciate how effective they can be in English conditions.
England’s bowlers first dismissed Pakistan for 171 before the hosts responded with a huge total of 409. Pakistan then struggled again in their second innings and were bowled out for 135, allowing England to complete a comprehensive victory.
For Root, the victory was an ideal beginning to his return as England’s full-time Test captain. However, he also stressed that England cannot afford to become complacent after winning the opening match and will need to maintain the same standards throughout the series.
England now lead the three-match series 1-0 and will head into the second Test at Lord’s with significant confidence. The performance of the pace attack will remain one of the biggest talking points as England look to extend their advantage over Pakistan.
