Nigeria and Ghana will open the inaugural Nigeria Cricket Federation Quadrangular T20 tournament as four teams compete in a round-robin competition in Lagos.
Nigeria and Ghana are set to open a new T20 tournament on September 21 as the inaugural Nigeria Cricket Federation Quadrangular T20 competition begins at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos. The tournament features four teams, with hosts Nigeria entering two sides alongside Ghana and Sierra Leone.
The opening match will see Nigeria take on Ghana, followed by Nigeria A facing Sierra Leone later the same day. The competition has been introduced as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s domestic and international cricket calendar and provide additional competitive opportunities for players.
Unlike a conventional four-team international tournament, Nigeria’s involvement includes both its senior side and Nigeria A. Ghana and Sierra Leone complete the four-team field. The teams will play one another twice in a round-robin format, with the overall winner determined after the final round of matches on September 27.
Nigeria enter the tournament with a strong recent record against Ghana. According to statistics cited by PUNCH, Nigeria had won all five previous meetings between the two teams since 2019. The new competition, however, gives Ghana another opportunity to test themselves against one of West Africa’s established associate cricket sides.
The tournament also forms part of Nigeria’s preparation for future international assignments. The Nigerian team is working under high-performance manager Stephen Mangongo, who was appointed earlier in 2026, while the side is also looking ahead to the 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier scheduled for Abuja in October.
The schedule will see matches played through September 27, with Nigeria, Nigeria A, Ghana and Sierra Leone meeting repeatedly during the round-robin stage. The new competition provides additional T20 cricket for the participating teams and gives players an opportunity to gain experience ahead of upcoming regional and international assignments.
