Pakistan make sweeping changes to their Test setup after losing the opening two matches of the England series.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made major changes to the national Test setup after Pakistan suffered consecutive defeats against England. With the three-match series already lost, the PCB has released seven players from the Test squad and introduced several new faces ahead of the final match in Birmingham.
The seven players released from the squad are Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar and Khurram Shahzad. Imam-ul-Haq was also dealing with an injury sustained during the second Test at Lord’s.
The changes come after Pakistan struggled significantly during the opening two Tests. England won the first Test by an innings and 103 runs before securing a 194-run victory in the second Test at Lord’s. Pakistan’s batting was a major concern, with the team failing to score more than 200 in any innings across the opening two matches.
The PCB has also introduced seven replacements. Among them are experienced batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, while Arafat Minhas and four uncapped players have also been added to provide greater depth and fresh options.
The coaching structure has undergone major changes as well. Sarfaraz Ahmed has been released from his role as head coach of the Test team, while Umar Gul has also left the coaching setup. White-ball coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke will take charge of the Test side for the final match.
The overhaul reflects the seriousness of Pakistan’s situation after a disappointing series. With the series already beyond their reach, the final Test provides an opportunity for the management to assess younger players and begin building a stronger Test squad for future assignments.
Pakistan will now hope that the fresh faces can provide greater energy and competition within the team. The third Test in Birmingham will therefore be about more than simply avoiding a clean sweep; it will also offer Pakistan an opportunity to begin rebuilding their Test side.
