Matt Renshaw struck his maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe as he strengthened his case for a place in Australia’s plans for the 2027 World Cup.
Matt Renshaw produced one of the biggest moments of his recent international career by scoring his maiden ODI century against Zimbabwe in Harare. His 109-run innings helped Australia defeat Zimbabwe by 59 runs in the opening ODI of their three-match series.
Renshaw’s century was particularly significant because it came after a lengthy wait for another international hundred. The Australian batter had last scored an international century nearly a decade earlier, making his latest performance an important personal milestone.
Batting at No. 6, Renshaw played a crucial role in Australia’s innings. He helped the visitors recover and build a competitive total after Zimbabwe’s bowlers had created pressure. Australia eventually posted 294 for eight from their 50 overs.
Renshaw’s innings also came during an important period for Australia’s 50-over cricket. With the 2027 Cricket World Cup approaching, every ODI provides players with an opportunity to strengthen their selection claims. Zimbabwe fought hard in reply, with Craig Ervine scoring 59 and Sikandar Raza adding 57. However, Australia’s bowling attack kept taking wickets at important stages. Nathan Ellis was particularly impressive, finishing with five wickets for 31 runs.
Zimbabwe’s Newman Nyamhuri also produced an outstanding bowling performance, claiming five wickets for 62 runs. His spell made him only the second Zimbabwean bowler to take a five-wicket haul against Australia in ODI cricket.
For Renshaw, however, the focus will now be on building consistency. He has previously spoken about his desire to return to Australia’s Test setup, while his limited-overs performances have also become increasingly important. His versatility gives him another avenue to remain in Australia’s international plans.
The first ODI victory gave Australia a 1-0 lead in the series, but the bigger picture is preparation for the 2027 World Cup. Renshaw’s century provides him with valuable momentum and gives the Australian selectors another performance to consider as they continue assessing their options for the tournament.
