ICC Introduces Three-Stage Tournament Structure for 14-Team World Cu
The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will feature a new tournament structure built around a Super Series, Group Stage and Super 7 phase before the knockout matches. The competition will involve 14 teams and 57 matches across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21, 2027.
The tournament will begin with a three-team Super Series in Windhoek, Namibia. The three teams involved will be those ranked 12th, 13th and 14th among the qualifying sides. They will play each other once, with the team finishing top advancing into the main Group Stage.
The Group Stage will then feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each team will play five matches within its group. Group A includes India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A, while Group B contains New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Qualifier B.
The qualification system then moves into the newly introduced Super 7 stage. The top three teams from each group will qualify, while the seventh position will go to the fourth-placed team with the better record between the two groups. This creates a seven-team second phase before the semifinals.
During the Super 7, all seven teams will play each other once, resulting in 21 matches. The points earned in the Group Stage will not be carried into this phase, meaning teams begin the Super 7 with a fresh competition for the top four semifinal positions.
The top four teams from the Super 7 will qualify for the semifinals. The team finishing first will face the fourth-placed side, while the second-placed team will play the third-placed team. The semifinals are scheduled for November 17 and 18, with the final set for November 21 at The Wanderers in Johannesburg.
The new format gives the 2027 World Cup a different progression from recent editions. Rather than moving directly from a conventional group stage into knockout matches, teams will have to navigate an additional seven-team league phase before the semifinalists are confirmed.
With 57 matches across 12 venues, the tournament will also be one of the largest ODI World Cups in terms of its match structure. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the competition, marking the World Cup’s return to Africa after 24 years.
