Former England star Kevin Pietersen has joined Brendon McCullum’s white-ball setup as a specialist mentor ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Kevin Pietersen is officially back in the England setup after being appointed as a specialist mentor for the national team’s white-ball sides. The former England batter will work with Brendon McCullum’s coaching staff as England begin their preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
The appointment represents a major return to the England environment for Pietersen, who last played international cricket for the country in 2014. During his playing career, he became one of England’s most influential limited-overs batters and played a key role in the team’s successful campaigns across formats.
Pietersen accumulated 4,440 runs in ODIs at an average of 40.73, including nine centuries. He was also highly effective in T20 internationals, scoring 1,176 runs at a strike rate of 141.51. He was part of England’s 2010 T20 World Cup-winning side, giving him valuable experience of succeeding on the global stage.
His new role will see him work alongside McCullum and members of England’s wider white-ball coaching group. Pietersen is expected to bring tactical knowledge, batting expertise and first-hand experience of playing international cricket at the highest level.
The timing of his appointment is particularly important. England are building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Pietersen will initially join England ahead of their white-ball series against Sri Lanka. He is also expected to remain involved during upcoming tours to Australia and South Africa before returning for England’s home series against Pakistan and New Zealand next summer and the World Cup itself.
