Bavuma and Miller Centuries Help Proteas Take Unassailable 2-0 Lead
South Africa have secured the three-match ODI series against Australia after defeating the visitors by 32 runs in the second ODI at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The Proteas now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead with one match remaining in the series.
South Africa were asked to bat first and posted a massive 365 for 9 in 50 overs. Captain Temba Bavuma anchored the innings with a century, scoring 103 from 116 deliveries, while David Miller produced an explosive 142 from just 93 balls. Miller’s innings included 12 fours and nine sixes and provided the acceleration that pushed South Africa beyond 350.
Miller and Bavuma put together a crucial partnership after South Africa had lost Aiden Markram with the first ball of the innings. The early setback could have placed pressure on the hosts, but Bavuma rebuilt the innings before Miller took the attack to the Australian bowlers. Their combined contribution transformed South Africa’s position.
Australia started their chase strongly and looked capable of mounting a serious challenge. However, the visitors lost wickets during the middle overs and eventually finished on 333 all out in 49.5 overs, falling 32 runs short of South Africa’s target. South Africa’s bowlers recovered after the Australian top order made a positive start.
The Australian innings was also affected by injuries and selection issues. Pat Cummins remained absent, while Nathan Ellis suffered a side strain during the match and was able to bowl only four overs. Australia captain Mitchell Marsh acknowledged the disappointment after his side failed to level the series.
The third and final ODI is scheduled for September 30 at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. With the series already secured, South Africa can now target a clean sweep, while Australia will have an opportunity to finish the ODI leg with a victory before attention turns toward the upcoming Test series between the teams.
