Adam Zampa has become only the second Australian spinner after Shane Warne to reach 200 ODI wickets.
Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa reached a major career milestone during the second ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare, completing 200 wickets in men’s One-Day International cricket. Zampa achieved the landmark after taking two wickets for 62 runs from nine overs as Australia defeated Zimbabwe and secured the three-match series.
Zampa entered the Zimbabwe series just two wickets short of the milestone. Australia’s series guide had identified him as being on 198 ODI wickets before the second match, meaning the spinner needed only two dismissals to join an exclusive group of Australian bowlers.
The milestone arrived when Zampa dismissed Innocent Kaia and Craig Ervine during Zimbabwe’s chase. His two wickets took his career tally beyond the 200 mark and made him the seventh Australian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets. He also became only the second Australian spinner to achieve the feat after the legendary Shane Warne.
Zampa’s achievement comes after years of being a key component of Australia’s limited-overs bowling attack. His ability to operate through the middle overs has made him an important option for Australia, particularly when captains need a wicket-taking spinner capable of controlling the scoring rate.
The second ODI also produced a strong overall performance from Australia. Travis Head scored a century as Australia posted a formidable total before Zimbabwe were restricted during their chase. Australia ultimately won the match and took an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series.
Zampa’s milestone also places his career alongside some of Australia’s most successful ODI bowlers. Glenn McGrath remains Australia’s leading ODI wicket-taker with 380 wickets, while Warne finished his ODI career with 291 wickets. Zampa’s achievement therefore represents an important milestone for Australia’s modern limited-overs cricket.
At 200 ODI wickets, Zampa now has another major landmark to add to his international career. With Australia continuing to prepare for future global competitions, his experience and wicket-taking ability will remain an important part of the team’s white-ball plans.
