Nathan McSweeney has been relieved of Australia A captaincy as he focuses on his batting and attempts to push for a Test recall.
Nathan McSweeney has been released from Australia A captaincy duties ahead of the team’s upcoming first-class matches against India A, allowing the batter to concentrate on his individual performance. Peter Handscomb has been appointed Australia A captain for the two four-day matches in Puducherry.
McSweeney has regularly captained Australia A and has also led South Australia, but the latest change is designed to give him greater focus on his batting. His performances in India could be important as Australia assess their options for future Test selections, particularly with the next Border-Gavaskar Trophy scheduled to take place in India.
The Australia A tour begins with a four-day match against India A in Puducherry on September 22. A second first-class match will follow, giving several players an opportunity to perform in conditions similar to those they could encounter during Australia’s future Test assignments in India.
Handscomb’s appointment also gives the experienced batter another opportunity to demonstrate his leadership and batting credentials. He is part of a group of players being monitored for Australia’s future Test plans, while the A squad also includes names such as Sam Konstas, Campbell Kellaway, Todd Murphy, Corey Rocchiccioli and Jhye Richardson.
For McSweeney, the priority is now likely to be runs rather than leadership responsibilities. The 27-year-old has already experienced international cricket and has been part of Australia’s Test setup, meaning a strong performance in India could strengthen his case for another opportunity.
The conditions in Puducherry should also provide a valuable test of the Australia A batters and bowlers. With the senior Australian side preparing for major assignments in South Africa and India, performances from the A squad could influence future selection discussions.
